And are there discussions?

Ya, I’m hoping for an answer for this too.

Not everyone gets into PH116 lecture. Usually you have to sign up for it in Phase I or else you’ll get a very high waitlist number and have a very low chance of getting in. I remember I tried a couple semesters ago and I was a waitlist number in the triple digits (somewhere between 150-200) and before the first lecture I was still at around #50, so I dropped the class from waitlist. I’m in the course this semester because I signed up for it phase I and now as a 3rd year, I had a good enough time to get in, but I still barely made it.

So I believe that it’s almost a must to sign up for it Phase I to get in. As for discussions, starting this semester, they changed the requirements for discussion in the course. When you sign up for the lecture, it is a 2-unit 2 hour lecture. What’s new this semester is that you can add an optional 1 hour a week discussion and that will also give you an extra unit, making it a 3-unit class. In the discussion you have to do a little more work and take quizzes, but if you’re thinking about being a TA for the course or applying for the other internship they offer (don’t remember name), you have to have a discussion. Once you’re in lecture, you should be able to get into a discussion time easily that fits into your schedule as long as you sign up for it early on and not wait to do it (you won’t have to worry about signing up for discussion until class starts).

Don’t listen to this guy. I was around 300 on the waitlist for this semester, and they bumped up the class size so I got in.

I was referring to last semester (Spring 2009) when they didn’t bump up the class size and I couldn’t get in. Plus, things change every semester and depending on people who have priority & the popularity of a course during different semesters, you may or may not get in.

I was waitlisted about 100+ also and I got in. This was spring 09. PH116 is a student-run class. They try to accommodate everyone; I didnt know of anyone that did not get in. Dont let the numbers scare you.

lol well being in the mid-upper 200s is kind of daunting. lmao…i kinda want to take a discussion for the internship if what bigaus said is true

I do know that if you want to apply for a TA position or an internship you have to take a discussion section.
