Does First semester really make or break me?

I have a 3.71 weighted after my junior year in high school, and im currently a senior. Sadly senior year isnt going as well as I want it too and I’m struggling in some of my classes and I’m really worried that these low grades are going to keep me from getting admitted. If I 2-3 B’s first quarter is that really gonna break me? or will I be okay? I know second quarter I have time to turn it around but 1st quarter so far has been a disaster.

Make or break you how? What schools are you looking at applying to? Take a look at the Common Data Set for every school you are interested in, scroll down to section C and look at the breakdown in the stats for admitted students. If you are within range even with a few additional Bs, then don’t sweat it. If the Bs mean you are in lowest 25%ile either for GPA or class rank, then you need to classify these schools as reaches.

I’m applying to schools like Binghamton, Boston University, George Washington, Fordham, Villanova, and American. My school is SUPER competitive, and its also very rigorous event the regents courses. I just really dont wanna mess it all up because of one bad quarter or half a year.

Don’t worry so much about your first semester. Just get your applications in and try to improve your grades. Also, go in and talk to your guidance counselor. If she/he feels it is necessary or would help, he/she can put a line in the letter (or send a separate letter) addressing the issue. Some students don’t do as well early each year and improve as the year wears on. Schools understand that. Midterm grades are not final. Your end of the year grades up to senior year are far more important. Your first quarter grades are meaningless. And for full year courses, your 1st semester grades are pretty meaningless too. And a few B’s at the quarter is hardly tanking!
