Does having 1 W hurt your chances of getting accepted?

I am currently in community college and am considering dropping a class and getting a W (my first one) because it is a very hard class that may hurt my GPA, which I need to raise (I currently have a 3.4). Would having that W on my record hurt my chances of getting in to USC? I’m applying for Film Production as my first choice and History as my second choice (they consider second choice majors). Would it be better to stay in the class and risk getting a B or worse, or would dropping while I have the chance be a safer bet?

Seriously? “W” should ONLY be used if you are very likely to get a “D” or an “F.”

Having a “B” on your transcript would be approximately 1,002 times better than a “W.”

reelfilm - you should come join us in the transfer thread. There are a few SCA applicants, myself included.

I agree with alamemom, a “W” will look way worse than a B. When they see a W, they will assume you could not handle the course load and/or were failing the class. Even though it won’t affect your GPA, it will affect the way the admissions counselors look at the grades you do have, so it’s actually counterproductive.

So study reeeally really hard for that B :)

thanks for the advice guys, i will just stay in the class and try really hard for the B
