Because NZ citizens are considered as the minority group do they have better chances to getting into schools like UCLA?
I know someone whose SAT score is like 1800~1900 and GPA like 3.8.
Is it easier for that person even with such scores because of being the minority?
It’s not going to increase your chances of admission. They will evaluate you as a typical student. If they want a more diverse class? Yes, that’s possible, but just because you’re from NZ does not mean you’ll have a better chance of getting in compared to a U.S. student.
It does not make him/her a minority; it makes him/her an international student. S/he will be evaluated with the other international students, not entered into the minority pool. It may pique someone’s interest, but not significantly to make him/her an automatic admit.
It can be a severe liability at schools that are over-applied by international students. They aren’t timid saying they place caps on admitting non-US students. Minority – in the technical sense. Not a wanted minority by many schools, however.
Also remember that public universities (you specifically cited UCLA) have been principally created, enhanced, and sustained by the individual state’s taxpayers, Therefore, in some instances, they appropriately prioritize matriculation by their citizens.
No, you will be regarded as an international student.
It may help you with admission to universities in New Zealand. Unless you also have US citizenship or permanent residency, you will be at a disadvantage for admission, financial aid, and scholarships at US universities.
The original poster says that he is a US citizen as well, so he will be considered a dual citizen and not an international student.
^ The OP mentions no such thing in this thread, and talks about his “friend” being a NZ citizen.
Yes, right, like how I need to get those Justin Bieber concert tickets for a “friend”.
Hahaha I personally am a dual citizen cuz I have both U.S. and korean citizenship but my friend has a NZ citizenship and he kept on telling me how it’s easier for him to get into U.S. unis cuz he’s a minority and I just got curious
Being from NZ does not make him a minority. If he is a non-white student that happens to be from NZ he might be a minority.
Being Maori would make him a Pacific Islander and a minority, being run-off-the-mill -descendents of British settlers- New Zealander doesn’t. In addition, being an international is actually a liability since, as mentioned above, internationals face higher hurdles to gain admission, especially if they need financial aid.
