I am 19 years old and currently go to community college as a biochemistry major and my GPA is 3.4. My goal is to get into a UC like UCLA. I am also interested in applying to USC. I was wondering if having a patent would increase my chances of being admitted? I have 4 scientific patents filed on electrostimulation therapy and a body stretching apparatus (used for medical purposes) as well as one on nano particles (this patent was huge so they split it into two patents). FYI: my patents are all granted. I ask people around and many said that I would have no trouble getting into any university, someone even suggested I apply to IV LOL. I’m just unsure regarding my GPA.
Why are you at a CC instead of a university now?
When did you develop and file these patents? Are they currently being used by industry?
Do you want to continue to pursue the lines of research that led to the patents? If so, are you in contact with the lead research teams in that field? If they are university based, your best plan is to communicate directly with the principal investigators on those projects for help in identifying the best institutions to apply to.
The patents can’t hurt but I suspect that your CC grades will be the most important for admission. I guess I don’t understand your question. You have the patents, you have a CC GPA and you want to get a 4-year degree so you will need to apply to your schools of choice anyway. It is likely that your research experience in general will help but you need to see what the statistics are at the schools you like for transfer GPA. This will help you gauge how likely you are to be admitted.
Bottom line, make sure you apply to a safety anyway.
