<p>I think they look at GPA in the context of course rigor. They want to see that the student has challenged himself with the most competitive schedule and succeeded at that level.</p>
<p>Reporting middle 50% based on rank and test scores is the norm among colleges not just UIUC because that is what US News created many years ago as a reporting measure for its rankings. </p>
<p>Until two years ago, class rank was very important and more important than GPA for purpose of admission at UIUC. As a result of more and more high schools refusing to provide rank, UIUC dropped class rank as a consideration for the class that began last August. Now keys are GPA in college prep courses (your grades in health, PE, vocational courses mean nothing) and difficulty of course schedule along with SAT or ACT scores. SAT subject tests are still ignored completely (if you send them those who actually make admission decisions won’t even know you sent them).</p>
