I have a quick question. For Harvard, financial aid deadline for submitting tax returns is March 1st. Moreover they only want 2011 tax returns. The problem is the official deadline for submitting tax returns to the government is March 15th. My dad says that he will probably take up till then and might even file for an extension.

As a result, my financial aid application will remain incomplete.

Does this effect admissions in any chance? Assume one gets accepted (a very hard feat I know). Then this accepted candidate’s file goes to the financial aid office. They find out that the applicant has an unfinished aid application. Do would they reject the applicant then? And if they don’t then how would the applicant get aid?

So long as you applied for financial aid, and your dad fills out the FAFSA and CSS Profile with estimated figures, it should not effect your chances of admission. However, if accepted, your acceptance package will not contain a financial aid award. That will be sent later when Harvard receives his 2011 Tax return via IDOC system on the CSS Profile.

They look at your application and financial aid separately. That is why, they have “need-blind” admissions. You are admitted no matter your need. If accepted, you just won’t get your aid package with your acceptance packet. That is totally ok, it will just come later once all the materials have been received!

We filled out the FAFSA (estimated), but not the CSS/Profile by March 31 and our son was admitted anyway. I think we got the CSS/Profile done a month or two later. Like your father, we also got an extension from the IRS to file the returns.
