Does it consider as fraud

My family became the green card holder in July , 2016. Therefore , they did not file the income tax of 2015 and they are still working overseas. When I was applying FAFSA , I mistakenly thought that the are asking me my parent monthly income, so I put $6545 as my answer and I got $6558 grant and work study . Until last night , when I was reviewing my application , I found out that they were asking for my parent yearly income . So I correct it as soon as I can . Does it consider as fraud ? I’m not intentionally provided wrong information , should I contact the school now ?

If your family are green card holders, they should be filing U.S. income taxes wherever they are working in the world.

Is this for school year 2017-2018 or are you in school now?

RIght now you have multiple issues going on:

If you are not in school now, then you need to correct your FAFSA with the correct information
Your school will most likely ask you for documentation before any monies are actually distributed so you will still have time to correctly submit your FAFSA.

With an income of only $6545, you are going to be flagged for low income verification because they school will want to know how your family survives on only $6545.

If you accept your funds and no not make the changes that accurately reflect your situation, then yes, you have commited fraud, which you and your parents stated on the FAFSA the information is correct. You risk jail time, fined, repaying all monies you have fraudently received, not receiving aid, having your admissions rescinded for willful misrepresentation.

If you are a NYS resident, if your parents are not actually living in NYS, you will not be eligible for TAP

You need to amend your FAFSA to reflect the correct income your parents earned in 2015. If they were NOT U.S. citizens in 2015 AND worked abroad, they might not have been required to file a 2015 tax return. If that is the case, contact your colleges as you will need to complete a non-filers statement for them for 2015…because they were not required to file taxes here.

But for 2016, they WILL need to complete a U.S. tax return regardless of where they reside if they are green card holders and earn enough for them tombe required to file. The 2016 tax return information will be used for the 2018-2019 school year.

What IS your parent annual income? Your first post is sort of confusing!

If your parents worked in 2015 in the US, they could have and should have filed taxes. While they did not have a SSN, they could have gotten a taxpayer id number and filed taxes.

Where did they work and reside in 2015 when they did not hold green cards? Regardless of the location, you do still need to list this yearly income on your FAFSA because you are green card holders now.

Where do they work and reside now?

ETA and maybe @happymomof1 can clarify. How would these parents who work abroad, and continue to work abroad, and likely live abroad even get a green card? Isn’t a green card for those who wish to be permanent residents and live and reside HERE?

Yes, you should contact the school ASAP.

You need to amend your FAFSA and also contact the school. It was an accident, but you must do this because there can be penalties when discovered later.

If he amends the fafsa, why does he also need to contact the school? People make mistakes on the fafsa, and amend it all the time. It is resubmitted to the school with the correction.

I don’t understand why he would need to also contact the school.

Correcting his FAFSA will be enough. He can contact his school and ask if he’ll lose anything else he may have been awarded. The school may tell him that he’ll lose his work study as well.

Just amend the FAFSA with the correct information, and you should be alright!

Also, I don’t see why it’s necessary to comment on OP’s grammar/english writing skills. That’s not what they were asking about, and we know nothing about OP, including OP’s history with english lessons. Let’s just all be respectful to each other, and continue to keep CC a friendly and judgement-free place.
