Does it matter what subject tests I take, and how I do?

Boston University requires 2 subject tests

I signed up for the Math level 1 and the Literature.

I heard Math 1 is generally the less accepted one, but I checked at all the schools I am applying, all which are mid tier, no ivies or really competitive ones, and they either do not require subject tests, or don’t restrict the math level 1.

Basically, will BU, or any 45 - 80 ranked college for that matter, care if I took the math level 1.

I am applying to the business schools, so I don’t think it should matter too much…just double checking.

Also, if you don’t do as well on the subject tests, how detrimental is it to your admissions chance?

I have a 2100 SAT, with a perfect writing score :D, and a 3.55 or 3.6 GPA…so for the schools I am applying to my stats are pretty strong…

Overwhelming majority in the range you mention, 45-80 in USNews, won’t care what you take because they don’t even want you to send any SAT II scores and don’t look at them even if you do send them. For those that do like BU, it usually can be any two unless applying engineering in which case some may require a math and science. Math 1 is fine for most colleges that require or recommend SAT IIs although some, like UCs, do not accept math 1, and Stanford recommends math 2. Also be aware that many of those in the 45 to 80 range either do not use the writing score of the SAT or give it little value in determining admissions.

If subject tests are required and you do poorly then it will definitely have an impact; the question is what is a good score and that can vary but for those in range you mention, who actually require SAT IIs, in the 600s is probably acceptable and won’t diminish your chances.

Finally, be aware that the businees schools of any college can often be more difficult to get into and higher stats/middle 50% ranges than those you see published for the university as a whole may be needed to be a solid candidate

thanks so much for your response - exactly what I was looking for.

I pretty much heard the same thing - as long as you hit like 580 and above it won’t hurt you, since I guess the subject tests aren’t that important - idk, they weren’t even mentioned at BUs information session.

Also, regarding the writing section. I actually heard the opposite for schools in that range, at least BU. BU I heard looks considerably more at the writing section than most other schools, which is one of the reasons Id like to go there.

Not to sound confident, but I also heard even for schools that don’t really consider the writing section, an 800 will always, as my guidance counselor said, “shine”…lol

But thanks so much for the response…greatly appreciated

Regarding Math Level 1 vs. Level 2, a lot depends on how good of a math student you are, and what math class you are taking now. For good math students who have taken Pre-Calculus or above, it is generally easier to get a higher score on Math Level 2 than in Math Level 1, because the curve is much more generous. Why not take a practice test of both levels, and see which one you get a better score on?

Do you have any other subjects you could take instead? Have you taken any AP classes that have related subject tests, especially US History?

BTW, it doesn’t matter what subjects you signed up for - you are free to select any of the offered subject tests on the day you take the test.

Also, BU will accept the ACT in lieu of SAT + SAT Subject Tests. So another option is to just take the ACT, and maybe its score will work out to be better than your SAT score.

BU is the only school in the ~45-80 range that I can think of that requires subject tests.

Sacchi, problem is I am taking them tomorrow! Lol

I am not too worried, I have a good sense for math, and honestly I emailed BU and they said they use the subject tests for placement, and not really for admissions, so Im not that worried. Got their response about 10 min after I posted this, lol

Im already at their average for GPA and pretty high above their average for the SAT, with 2300 community service hours, and some strong ECs…so Im hoping my other parts of the application are strong enough.

I was really surprised that BU even required them
