<p>I want to study English, and was planning to go to a liberal arts college, but it was against my parents’ wishes and they had me SIR to UC Riverside. I know it’s really late now, but I’m wondering if being in UC Riverside affects what I want to do, since it seems like the majority of people there want to study the sciences. On the other hand, I can try transferring to a liberal arts later.</p>
<p>It doesn’t matter where you go to get your English degree as long as the course offerings aren’t so limited that you find yourself taking versions of the survey courses repeatedly. That is, most of the several thousand US colleges will serve you just fine. If you have an interest in graduate education in English, then make sure the department has at least one course in literary theory. If you might become an English teacher, make sure there’s a “Teaching English” course, along with regular Shakespeare, college grammar, history of English course offerings. This will be most departments. Don’t spend a lot of money on this degree because you won’t make a lot of money when you first graduate. Do consider a college level club sport because you might be expected to coach a sport if you’re to be a teacher. Also, take some web design, mark-up language, photoshop, and powerpoint courses.</p>
