Does it strong to have a scientific reviewed publication in first author

I’m applying to college this fall. My GPA is not that strong, not really sure for the SAT (actually havent taken it tho), and i’m thinking of caltech as my first choice. I’m posing on a scientific reviewed journal. Can anybody tell me how does it work and how can i enhance my chances to peer engineering college?
