Does Kelley take weighted GPA's or unweighted?

I'm thinking about applying to Kelley soon but my weighted GPA is a 3.47. I have a 32 ACT. I don't think I'll get in though. However, after this semester I think my GPA will go up to a 3.67. With that GPA and a 32 ACT do I have a chance at getting in after petitioning? I heard that Kelley just looks at the highest GPA on the transcript, which in my case would be the weighted. Is this true?

Thanks in advance

btw my school sends both unweighted and weighted

Kelley will not round up your 3.67 to a 3.7 so you will have to petition (see their web-site) but your chances are excellent with your 32 ACT. My son had similar numbers and his petition was accepted. Good luck!

thanks for your response sebmom

so just to be sure, Kelley looks at the highest gpa on the transcript, weighted or unweighted. And did your son have a weighted GPA similar to my 3.67 or an unweighted?

Kelley will just look at your ACT score and accept you after you petition. They are most concerned right now with raising their standardized test scores, and so they will not turn away someone who will do that.

Ibanker, you should apply to IU as soon as you can. Then after you receive your acceptance package, start working on your petition to Kelley. I agree with others here that you should get direct admit to Kelley with your 32 ACT, but you need to get accepted to IU first.

okay thanks for your response.

So since my current weighted GPA is only 3.47, I'll apply to IU really soon and wait until January when my first semester grades come out to petition for Kelley. Because then my weighted GPA will be higher.

I have a question though. I heard that only 10% of applicants get direct admit. But getting a 3.7 weighted GPA and a 29 ACT score doesn't seem that difficult. Is there a catch somewhere?

Does Kelley offer direct admission as an incoming freshman?

Yes. Over half of our students are directly admitted as freshmen. The requirements for Direct Freshman Admission reflect our mission to attract the most motivated, brightest students possible. For a list of current admission criteria, see our page for Future IU Freshmen.

For direct admission to Kelley, will they look at weighted GPA? (sorry to sound like a broken record)

They look at whatever is higher on the transcript, so if your school publishes the weighted GPA then yes.

Ok great! My weighted is 4.17 and my unweighted is 3.69 so I'm worried.

My son's weighted GPA was just shy of the 3.7 direct admit requirement, and he also had a 32 ACT. Good advice from others to apply to IU now, and as I recall, the petition became available on the Kelley web-site on October 1st, and Kelley accepts petitions until April 15th or thereabouts. My advice is to have every piece part of the petition ready to go (essay, letter of recommendation, etc.) before the end of your 1st semester, and send everything in as soon as your 1st semester transcript becomes available. I am just a mom, so PLEASE call Kelley's undergrad dept. and run this by them....make sure this is the best approach to take. Again, good luck!

packalldwy, you might contact your counselor to see which gpa was reported to IU. Your 3.69 won't get you the $9,000 per year scholarship, but your 4.19 unweighted will get you the scholarship if you have an ACT of 30 or higher. That would be a pretty large savings.

Hmm I have the 30+ ACT but I'm pretty sure my high school sends both GPAs.
