Hi, guys I’m 17 seventeen and turning 18 in May. My height is about 5’5 and 5’6 with shoes. I drink the dairy product milk that is “Our farmers pledge No Articifial Growth Hormones.” I’m trying to grow at least 2 inches more taller and haven’t seen the result except maybe a half-inch increase without recognition. I just need to know if the milk with “no artificial growth hormone” means it doesn’t have growth result in a trend of time or does it mean that it helps you grow a little at my age?

… the growth hormone is BOVINE GROWTH HORMONE. O.O

You’re nearly 18 male, I don’t think you’re gonna grow much more chief.

Milk will not you make you grow. The research I’ve seen has said that there is a very shaky correlation between artificial growth hormones and experiencing puberty earlier… and breast development in males. Unfortunately, nothing exists that makes you get taller than you should naturally, steroids can help you grow earlier, but that’s the extent of it.

Milk is overrated and does more harm than good in my opinion. Milk is far from a super food, its not going to magically make you grow. Good nutrition and genetics do that.

I personally drank a lot of milk back in the day and I still do. I love my fat-free milk hands down. I’m 5’10 and Asian so I guess for me it worked if milk actually does help you grow… I do have very thick bones too… Might be genetics for that one though. No one in my family was tall, I’m the tallest in both my moms and dads side… I stopped growing though and I’m 19 now.

I actually drank an entire gallon of milk yesterday. o.O Three quarts of skim and one of chocolate. Yummy. I want more.

I drink a lot of milk but it doesn’t necessarily help you grow. Your height is dependent on genetics.

I drank tons of milk a a child/teen and I’m a 5’10 female. I’ve got super strong bones and great teeth too.

Maybe milk has something to do with it, maybe not. It’s probably too late for it to have any effect on you now, though.

I think if you want to see actual effects, you’d have to have been drinking milk regularly since you were young and not just starting when your puberty is almost reaching its end. It’s pretty difficult to grow 2 inches at your age. Most people I’ve noticed at my school reach their growth spurt between 8th-10th grade, and afterward don’t grow significantly. I have some friends that have been drinking milk pretty regularly, and not all of them are tall. Definitely don’t be expecting to grow 2+ inches, at most it is usually 1 inch.

From your post, it’s kind of ambiguous whether you’re aware about the artificial growth hormones they mean for milk, but I’ll go on anyways… About the “no growth hormone” thing, the point of those hormones aren’t for the benefit of humans, nor are they supposed to help you grow. (You don’t see any milk cartons boasting “Milk from cows that have used growth hormones!”) When they say “without artificial growth hormones”, it means the cows that made the milk were not fed anything with growth hormones to speed up their growth and production of milk. Milk, and other meat foods or veggies/fruits, produced without artificial growth hormones are actually supposed to be healthier for you.

Milk doesn’t do jack and like someone already mentioned, is actually harmful for you (think drinking soda).

Any of its supposed health effects are dubious at best - there is more calcium in one piece of broccolli than in a gallon of milk.

And why are you people claiming you have strong bones? How the F do you know that? Because you drank a lot of milk (which doesn’t do jack)?

I’m going to claim that I have super-omega-superman-made-of-diamond bones. I am just that awesome.

Wrong.
1 cup milk - 300 mg calcium
1 cup raw broccoli - 40 mg calcium

For those too lazy to read through it:

“The medical profession and the media encourage the public to drink milk and eat dairy products because “it does the body good”. Nothing could be further from the truth! Higher calcium and protein intake is proported to lower the incidence of osteoporosis according to the Dairy Council and the dietitians that refuse to study the medical literature that is not in accordance with the Dairy Industry Commandments. Dr. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., professor of Nutritional Sciences, Cornell University, is the Director of the China-Oxford Cornell Study, the largest study of diet and disease in medical history. His findings: higher animal calcium and animal protein intake is the primary cause of degenerative disease.”

I try to avoid milk as much as I can. I only have it occasionally with cereal.

Bottom line: Everything we eat and/or drink has been determined to be the thing that will kill us at one point or another.

Eat and drink what you like.

OP: I doubt milk of any sort will help you at this point, as you’re through puberty (or certainly near the end). You’re probably not going to get much taller no matter what you do.

There was a great article in the New Yorker a few years ago studying height trends in various countries. Average American male heights are decreasing. The Netherlands has the tallest men, the article notes that they also have the highest consumption of dairy products.

Certain growth phases occur throughout child/teenhood, and if your body does not receive the calcium and nutrients during those critical times, height will not reach its genetic potential. (Google The New Yorker for details.)

If it’s any encouragement, my dad was 5’10 at 17 and is now 6’3. Men especially can hit their final growth spurt in their 20’s.

I like milk and everything good is bad so I’m not going to stop drinking it.

I drink about 3/4 of a quart of skim milk per day minimum, and I am only 5 7 5 8 and I turn 17 next week… So doesn’t really do much. Mostly genetics probobly.

By the way, your statement “wrong” is a sentence fragment. So it too is wrong. /sarcasm

And I can tell by your rudeness and pomposity that you probably don’t have many friends and are probably a freshman - no need to sling venom at someone in a civil conversation buddy.

But what do I care? You drink all the milk and smoke all the cigarettes you want. For the both of us.

Men usually reach full height by 20, so 17 means that you have a slim chance of growing more.
