Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: From the website -

Minorities aren’t held to lesser standards, so don’t expect it to be a huge boost to your application if you have demonstrated poor academics - but it is considered and put in context.

They definitely practice AA, which is galling. This past year, there were 14 applicants from my former large high school, and only one got in - a female minority. Many of the others were better qualified by objective criteria (grades, test scores, etc) and though no slouch, this girl had nothing to make her stand out over those rejected than her ethnicity. It is really sad that the pursuit of “diversity” makes better qualified applicants unsuccessful.

piper is correct, end of thread.

On the real though dude, its not entirely impossible that she was just a really interesting kid. I don’t know about you, but when I toured MIT, the thing that i loved most about it was the people… so… I’d say they’re doing a good job, so I’m not one to critique their standards. Also, keep in mind that MIT (like most upper tier schools) takes into account how well they think a given applicant will do in college and later in life. The admissions officers have been doing this for years, so I’m inclined to think that they can judge that pretty well.

I kinda had a bout of anti-AA thoughts one year when a guy I know got into an Ivy, and I didn’t think he was qualified. I’ve talked to him since then though, and he’s doing really well. Probably shouldn’t scrutinize an admissions process that is older than us, lol.

Sorry for the brief aside, OP

Affirmative action is better than athletic recruitment.
