Does NYU Poly require Calculus?

@dukedom:

The only logical reason for not taking AP Calculus BC is that you feel like you won’t pass. Given this, you should seriously reconsider your intended major. Forget about admissions; maybe you’ll get admitted. If the you’re lucky and/or the program isn’t too rigorous, you might stand a chance. But think about the long-term career/life implications of what you’re doing…

I don’t know about passing the AP exam because rarely any body does but I think I can do decent in class. As I said before, I didn’t try in math before. I just can’t wait to take math next year! I’m seriously considering to take AP Calculus AB, which I probably will next year.

Anyways, I’ve done some research, this looks interesting:

[Business and Technology Management, BS | NYU-Poly](<a href=“Home | NYU Tandon School of Engineering”>Home | NYU Tandon School of Engineering)

Can you tell me more about this?

And also, can someone give me more information and explain this:

[Integrated Digital Media, BS | NYU-Poly](<a href=“Home | NYU Tandon School of Engineering”>Home | NYU Tandon School of Engineering)

I want to know more from people who are in college, I know I can Google but I’d rather hear it from you guys.

Thanks.

Mmm, this site seems to have some kind of modification installed to vBulletin, in order to convert the URLs in the posts into page titles, interesting.

I was meaning to code up a package that does this for SMF… I know what I’m gonna do this week :)

Business and Technology Management looks like a business major program with a slight emphasis on the IT side of things (though the less technical parts). If you want to go into the more technical parts of IT (system and network administration), you probably want to add the CS courses in operating systems, networks, and security to such a major.

I believe SMF has that. I am not sure, and SMF to me is like a dead community lol, just like phpBB. Forum heat is gone.

I think it is reasonable to say that 1/2 of the students who put efforts into the subject will pass with at least a 3, and those who don’t (or people who study in the last minute) is more likely not going to pass. I have never AP Math exams, but I have those review books, and I was surprised because on my Calculus I final there was one question on maximization coming out of the AP review book.

For business’ IT/IS you may think about CUNY Baruch College.
Given the curriculum of Integrated Digital Media, it’s basically a media major. But this is not audio engineering.

Actually, about 49% of those who took the AP Calculus BC exam in 2010 scored a 5, and about 83% scored a 3 or higher. Of course, this may be due to a self-selecting group of students (the best math students in high school); the less confident in math students who enrolled in calculus in high school probably tended toward AP Calculus AB, where only about 21% scored a 5 and only about 54% scored a 3 or higher on the exam.

AP Calculus BC is a no for me because I already have AP Physics which is 2 periods, I can’t add BC which is also 2 periods because it will all conflict with my other AP classes.

Mmm, Business and Technology management seems interesting, very interesting.

Hey guys,

I’ve got my last report card back, as school has ended. Didn’t do so good :frowning: Not good at all. Still wondering what you guys think? and can I give this some sort of boost senior year? The college office told me that colleges only look at Junior year.

Anyways, but the college office also told me that my grades seemed good enough for NYU Poly, based on my SAT of 1550 and my Average of 85, which is a 3.0/4.0 in my school.

My final grades were:

Pre-Calculus 75 :frowning:
French :frowning: 75 but I don’t care, since I passed the regents YEAH! (hate this class)
English: 85 (I thought I’d get a 95, but my school messed up my regents score. They thought I was absent because someone else with my last name was. Thus, I was marked with a 0 but they fixed it, after they found my booklet, got an 86 on the English regents).

Physics: 75 :frowning: OUCH (Basically, in physics for this year, my grades are: 75, 85, 85, 75), I’ve gotten a 72 on the regents.

Algebra2/Trig: 85 (got a bad 67 on the regents, but I didn’t really study or anything for it).

Math Team: 95 (yeah, we get a grade for this too).

I think those are all my classes, anyways yeah… I didn’t do so good.

Comments? Advice?

Thanks.

out of 1600?
Dude. That’s amazing. But what about out of 2400?
I think your SAT has just increased your chance by 30%. LOL I just make up that number, but seriously, not that many people can score close to 1600.

Your science and math grades are weak, which can hurt you admission chance, but I won’t worry anymore because you can’t do anything to them now. Work harder in the fall. Your fall transcript will still be seen by the committee (in general… double check that with NYU-Poly).

Prepare to ask teachers / counselor to write you good recommendation. Prepare a resume as well.

Good personal statement and admission essays will help your chance too.

Haha, I wish out of 1600 -.- Nope, that’s out of 2400.

Someone in my school, got the same SAT and almost same GPA as me and he made it to Poly this year.

College dept. Said City College was my saftey and Poly was a reach because their standards are less than those of NYU.

Anyways, I promise I’ll work hard on my SATs in October. I plan to get at least a 1800/2400 on my second try. I also plan to take SAT 2s in probably Math 2 and maybe Physics.

Side note: Should I take SAT 2 for US history? I’m pretty sure I could pull a 700+ history comes naturally to me.

Let’s not worry about writing. What are your math and CR? Improve your math to at least above 650. It shouldn’t be very difficult if you study the right way.

Remember… your biggest weakness is that you follow muscle training. Don’t let that fool you. Everyone is taught the same way, but you have to overcome that hurdle. Do extra problems. Try difficult problems. Understand the approach. Pay attention to the formula. Ask questions. Ask why we have to do things certain ways, and ask whether there are alternatives?

Be it CCNY, be it local community college such as QCC, you will be challenged because of this weakness. You are a bright person, but find out a way that can help you.

We are here to help.

=====

I will not take Physics because it is simply too much work.
Math 2 should be taken because you need to make sure you have a good understanding of your alegrab, some geometry, and pre-calculus. I will not take the physics one, if I were you.

You have Oct, Nov (I think), and definitely December.

Sure, why not?

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. Yeah, next year I will try harder in my math classes, especially calculus.

I think I shouldn’t take the Physics SAT 2 either but my teacher is willing to give extra credit, like 2 98s averaged into our science subject era in our transcript, if we at least get a 600 on the exam… But honestly, if I take the test in November, I don’t think it will really matter, because the colleges won’t see it.

I will take Math 2 and maybe one more. I am not sure if I should take the US History exam because it wouldn’t really matter to the admission people at Polytech, would it? Because it’s not really anything engineering related.

By the way, I got a 98 on my US History regents, this year.

anyways, thanks for helping me and offering help in the future! You guys are awesome.

Hey,

Alright, I’m kinda confused right now about SAT tutoring. Well, I know that there is an ACT test in September and SAT is on October.

Well, I was wondering if I should take both of these? I think I can do better on the ACT because it has a science section, plus I took trig this year, so math should be a bit more easier.

Also, how should I go about studying for them?

Finally, should I sign up for the paid class from RevolutionPrep or Kaplan? My parents want me to but I don’t want to waste money :(

What would you guys recommend? THANKS.

SAT Math section is a lot simpler. I never took ACT so I can’t comment on it, but presumably SAT Math is simple enough that you don’t really need trig (a little bit). I came to USA when I was 12. My math teacher taught us basic trig in middle school, and SAT Math section requires nothing more than basic trig. The only identity I have ever used was sin^2 + cos^2 = 1.

Time is money. You need all the times you need to master both exams and all the sections. I would pick SAT over ACT if you haven’t taken ACT yet. Stick with SAT because the subject is limited in scope. It’s more predictable. Boost your CR and Math by doing many practice problems. Just prepare for SAT. You really don’t have time.

I took Princeton Review. It didn’t help me, but that probably was because I was a lazy student. My instructor was very nice. Just take one of them.
