Daughter received different admission terms to several schools. Do you think better to accept a spring admission at a higher ranked school versus a fall admission at a lower one?
@LionsTigersAndBears, I love universities that keep 5, 10 years of CDS reports on their web sites. I always look for categories that change over time because that signals where a university is going. As for where itâs no reliableâŠthe check box for considers demonstrated interest. Lots of schools donât check it that I KNOW consider demonstrated interest.
In what ways does the process of getting a book on higher education published differ from the publishing process for books on other non-fiction topics?
or given the population cliff do you think a gap year is advisable (depending on each student needs ofc)
@tmrc, if the outcomes are similar than I think the cheaper option is probably the better value. Also, what are the chances he will go to grad school? One thing I found in the research for my new book is that lots of families are looking at cheaper options for undergrad to save up for grad school or helping their kid launch after college.
@Jvo300, a lot of it depends on where you can get in. Not many people get to choose between an Ivy and UT-Austin. I think apply to both. If you get into both, then you get to weigh the cost, outcomes, etc.
@annaweld, I didnât as much as I thought I would. Originally, I had planned a whole chapter on that question, but the number of students going outside the US, while growing a lot, remain tiny. At some point when youâre writing a book, you have to leave a lot on the cutting room floor unfortunately.
@Jeff_Selingo Struggling bn standard admit gamble at Kelley business at IU v/s guaranteed Direct admit at Broad Business at MSU - does one go for the Direct Admit in a lesser ranked business program (Broad) versus trying for a standard admit at a higher rank (Kelley)? Kelley ranks higher as you know, is it that much superior? Any advice on how to guide our senior with this would be most appreciated. thanks.
@tifi, three good choices. Whatâs the major?
My son was accepted to Case Western, Rutgers, UPitt, and Fairfield. He plans to study finance and eventually stay on the East Coast for his career. These schools vary in size, reputation, and opportunities, and weâre weighing the pros and tradeoffs of each.
From your perspective, how do these schools compare in terms of finance programs, networking opportunities, and career placement, especially for someone aiming to work on the East Coast? Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
We are nearing the end of the live session, but @Jeff_Selingo has agreed to stay on and try to answer the questions that were asked prior to us going live. For all the questions that remain unanswered though, Jeff will share a link to his newsletter where you can find answers in the weeks to come.
@andrewf20, I donât believe prestige matters as much as we think. Itâs really the premise of the new book. But to answer your specific questions: matters more in certain fields and acceptance to certain grad programs. Matter more about getting the first job than the jobs beyond it. But I have plenty of advice in the new book on how even those âtruismsâ are sometimes myths. And sometimes itâs really about the prestige of the program rather than the university in landing a job.
Thanks. When is the live session over?
I will post an announcement. @Jeff_Selingo has agreed to extend it a bit considering the many questions we are getting!
How do you measure the strength of a collegeâs endowment. We are looking at smaller schools and Iâd like to verify the endowment is strong.
@DadOfJerseyGirl, those New Ivies are still hard to get into! Some have acceptance rates like 10 or 15%.
I have a list of 75 schools in the new book that are both excellent and accessible.
To answer your question: yes, the perception of schools can easily shift over time.
@InquiringMom2, I love CWRU! Go visit if you can. No campus is made up of just one type of student.
Thoughts on the budget cuts to the Cal State System and if Cal Poly SLO will remain a strong school?
Any way to see the list since book comes out in Sept and weâll be past this point.
@Jeff_Selingo Do you think the anticipated âpopulation cliffâ next year will help this yearâs (Fall 2025) incoming freshman transfer to a more desirable college next year? and/or if they took a gap year? Your last book is our dog-earred fave, one that weâve gifted to many families. THANK YOU
