Does Prestige Matter? Picking Your College as a HS Senior or HS Junior - Exclusive Written Q&A w/ Jeff Selingo on March 20 @ 7pm ET

It sounds like you/colleges are assuming that because someone lives in a wealthy area they are wealthy. Having programs available to you doesn’t mean you can afford/have “access” to them. Sure we have Model UN at our high school and many other programs. My son didn’t bother because we couldn’t afford the flights and weekends away from home. Same with Math competitions. So he did philosophy club and an environmental club instead.

I get the feeling that admissions officers at elite schools look more favorably on applicants that participated in Model UN than philosophy club.

Beyond asking the school directly, how can we know whether or not a school considers demonstrated interest?
