Does RSO and RA's have the right to enter res. hall living room (common room)?

The sign about Sungod festival says that freshmen res. hall common room is considered as public area, which RSO and RA can enter without the consent from the residents. Does it only apply during the Sungod festival because I remember someone told me that RSO and RA can’t enter into suit without the consent from the residents?

… I’m in Sixth College and our RA has the keys to our suite and can enter/leave the common room whenever they want. this has always been the case for us…

Yeah the dorms are all SCHOOL property and your housing contract indicates that they can even search your room if they want. So yeah be careful and keep your blinds closed on sungod, cause they definitely have the right to enter.

I live in Warren. My R.A. doesn’t have any keys and basically can’t enter our common room without us opening the door for them (RSOs included). But the common room is considered a public area so they can write you up if they catch you. As long as they can’t see/enter and prove that you’re drinking, I think you’re fine.

I’m in Marshall’s Judicial Board and I believe you have the right not to let them into your rooms or common areas UNLESS they have probable cause that there is a “health violation” going on in there…aka people drinking. They can go in if that is the case, if you agree or not. Don’t give them a reason to go in and they wont.

Don’t think that RSO’s and RA’s can’t write you up even if you won’t open the door for them. If you’re in your room/suite/whatever and being loud(er, i mean most places will be loud because it IS sungod) but you don’t open the door for them, they have reason to believe that you are drinking and can still write you up. And like others have said before, anywhere on campus is school property.

^ true. some of my suitemates were written up even for being in the same room as others who were drinking (yes, bedroom not common room), though they weren’t doing anything. be wary if you do.

droobles91,

You mean they were all in the bedroom? Or that even people in their bedrooms got written up because people in the common room were drinking? The latter would be so irrational…

Pretty screwed up things like that DO happen. Appeal to your J Board and we will most likely get you off for things like that.

hormones - I meant they were all in the bedroom but only one or two out of the five people in there were drinking. all got written up. yeah, the latter would be irrational - sorry for the confusion
