Does School Crush Independent Thought?

Most (high) schools today revolve around courses that force students to regurgitate information from the textbook. Worst of all, scholars are so consumed in AP/IB courses (they want to go to college) that they have to stay late most school nights to study and complete homework assignments (most students anyway). They usually have no time to think about themselves or the future. Does school crush independent thought?
To assess this question, we have to consider the alternative.

What would the average high-schooler do if he or she were not forced to do homework?

Personally, I would be surfing the 'net, playing around, and doing stuff unrelated to academics. Is that a conduit for independent thought? I think that’s more of a conduit for no thought :).

Why did you have to phrase this question as an SAT essay…? :/

Not everyone that goes to school is from CC; that is, they aren’t as motivated or driven to do well. Of course, as with every circumstance, there are exceptions. However, this would leave ~30-60% of students lolling around in parties, games, and basically, pointless activities.

Yes, it does. I’m a mindless drone of my teachers. I’ve not attempted to analyze what I’ve been taught since 7th grade because, really, there’s just no time. I believe everything my teachers and textbooks say.
