I just figured out that I am a second-generation college goer. Does that mean anything? Do i get some sort of advantage in college standing? I know that first-generations do…
Especially, does it mean something for international students trying to get into US unis?

no (10char)…

Nope, sorry. It asks on your application if your parents went to college and that’s the big deciding factor- there are probably a LOT of second-generations.

First-generations get a bump up because they’re overcoming extra obstacles in the whole college experience, I think. I definitely didn’t get any help from my parents- probably the opposite of help! With second-gen, your parents have experienced college and you’re also probably expected to go, which reduces a lot of the issues experienced by some first gens (for example, my dad STILL doesn’t even want me to go).

oh okay. thanks for your replies ![]()
brillar, i think you made a right choice to go to college! Good luck with everything!

In some cases, schools give second or third generation students a bump. My D is first generation and applied to a top 20 school. She was denied (no surprise since she was in the bottom quartile for the school,) but we found out confidentially that this school likes second or third generation students because they have a better track record of succeeding. Now I’m sure if she was in thier to 25% they may have looked at her differently but still the comment was made.

Think about what it ACTUALLY means to you. It it is really significant, you can write about it in an application essay.

im going to.
i was just wondering if there were any ‘official’ advantages…

No, did not matter for my S & D.
