Does self reporting test scores instead of sending official reports hurt my chances of acceptance?

Hello there,
some colleges state that the applicant may self report his/her scores and then send the official report after getting accepted or after the applicant decides that he/she is going to attend this college. My question is “Would this hurt my chances of getting accepted?”

I know that sending official reports is better of course, but there are some financial issues that would make it harsh to send 3 or 2 test reports for every university in my list; I am an international student. In addition to the fact that one dollar is equivalent to 18 Egyptian pound or so - because of the Egyptian economic inflation.

Thank you very much.

It won’t hurt your chances. Trust the school is telling you the truth when they offer that option.

But if there is any discrepancy between self reported scores and the official scores then your acceptance will be revoked.

It would not hurt your chance if they allow that. If what you reported cannot be verified by the official report after acceptance, your admission would be rescinded.

What is normally self-reported are AP’s, in which case it would be a waste to spend the money. Schools don’t expect you to end official reports until you matriculate. If you are referring to SAT2’s, you can send those along with your SAT for the same fee. You would have to pay separate if you are sending ACT scores and not SAT scores. I have not come across schools allowing you an option to self report SAT or ACT scores, but there could be cases or it may be the case for international students for that school. In any event, if the school allows it, save the money.

Agreed. But double check that the school allows this option for international applicants. e.g. Stanford does not require score reports from US applicants until after admissions, but requires them for international applicants with the application.

Some schools are allowing self reported SAT/ACT, and it’s exactly for the reason you give @EgyptianSTEMer – they don’t want cost to be a barrier to applying.

So no, it won’t be held against you. But as noted, you will have to provide scores to attend and the official must match the self-reported.
