Does Stanford value focus or an open mind?

I’m currently writing a very focused common app essay for Stanford, writing about exactly what I want to do with my career and that I want to study Engineering specifically. Does Stanford value career goals etc or do you think they’d prefer to see a freshman whose totally undecided about major…?

The thing is I’m showing elsewhere on the app that I’m interested in a wide variety of things from languages to performing arts as well so WHILE I’m focused on my career I also want to try a number of different things

One of my common app essays and one of my supplemental essays for Stanford is very focused on my career path, my experience in that career field, what I’m doing right now to advance in that field, etc. I think it should be fine.

I think having career goals and a focus is probably a good thing, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t change your mind later and also have an open mind.

So in short, choose a major that you are interested in for now.

Mine’s is actually pretty focused as well. I think that Stanford will value this because, from what I’ve heard, most college freshman aren’t sure about what they want to do.
