I know this is a private school but does UPenn consider student state of residency during application process?
For example let’s take two student with same exact stats but one from highly competitive state like CA and the other from less competitive state like SC. Does the SC student has better chance of getting into UPenn than CA student?
They may be true for many colleges as they like have representation from all the 50 states. Like to know if this is true for UPenn.
Not unless the state is PA, or more if the applicant is from Philadelphia. For everyone else, geographic diversity is less important than applicants from SC hope.
I do think some “national” colleges like to say they have students from 4X states, where X is as high as possible. I note it is often not 50 but 4X–more on that in a second.
But I don’t think that is going to help when applying from a state like South Carolina, which is still a mid-size state, I believe 23rd in population. Meaning just using their normal standards for admission, they will likely end up with at least a few people from South Carolina, and they just need one to check off that box.
Where it might actually matter is in the few states which actually are so small that many of these colleges don’t actually make it all the way to 50. Like, Wyoming is only around 1/9th the size of South Carolina, so now you are talking about a case where it might actually help.
