Does the Major Title Really Matter?

I currently attend Claremont McKenna College as an Economics Major. Unfortunately, I was just informed that the Data Science Sequence/Minor will not be available. I feel that Data Science is very valuable so I want to pursue Data Science related classes anyway but will not have the title on my resume. Does the title really matter? And how can I convince employers that I have a background in data science without the title?

No, the title doesn’t matter. Very few schools offer a data science major or minor, and the kind of people who are hiring data scientists understand that it’s a little bit CS, a little bit math/statistics. Don’t worry about this.

Agreed the title doesn’t matter, but do make sure you take courses in areas that you are interested in going into, e.g. data science. Make sure to take a few CS courses, a few relevant math courses, etc.

Isn’t that the sort of thing you could explain in the cover letter for the resume when you’re applying to jobs where data science would be useful/relevant.
