Does the ranking/prestige (when choosing between LACs, think Bowdoin, Kenyon, Wesleyan) of your undergrad school make a difference in the competitiveness of your medical school application? Will going to a more “well regarded” school really up your med school chances?

Wait for other answers but meanwhile browse the premed section. According to the adults here who have experience with such, the rank of your college doesn’t matter in the least. And what rank would that be anyway? There are no official rankings of colleges. Do you really think that med schools and grad schools care what a magazine dedicated to selling copies decided on?

By the way, those LACs are all superb.

Be careful about generalizing medical school characteristics to other post-bachelor’s programs. For example, PhD programs may have their own (internal) preferences about undergraduate origins. Of course, these will be major-specific, not necessarily obvious to outsiders (especially high school students selecting colleges), and unrelated to any rankings published in a magazine.

See @BrownParent’s answer in post #2. Did you browse the Pre-med forum. You’ll find the same answers there.

I believe that medical schools don’t really care where you went to school… as long as you made the most of your time there. They like to see research projects, and that you’ve challenged yourself. Your GPA will matter more than where you end up. Kenyon, Bowdoin, and Wesleyan are all solid options. They are all similar in caliber. I think Bowdoin might have a slightly better edge; Bowdoin produces many doctors! Both Wesleyan and Bowdoin have great pre-med facilities and research opportunities. Professors form great relationships at Bowdoin and can write great letters of recommendation. Also, Bowdoin has a relationship with Tufts Medical School since Maine does not have its own Medical School. I know that Bowdoin offers pre-med advisors and is strong in the sciences. You might have to find out about Wesleyan. Wesleyan is also great in the sciences! I’m not sure about Kenyon…

In the end, you can get into a great medical school from anywhere. You just have to find what school you can see yourself at and where you believe you could thrive in. The prestige of a school won’t be what gets you in.
