Looking now at the decision for her to go there tuition free vs Michigan OOS at $52K, and maybe through Zoom, I think she made the right choice.

I don’t think there is any selective university in the country that disregards freshman grades. They are party of your GPA. In fact, for most students they are far more important than your senior year grades, especially if you are submitting your applications in the fall of your senior year before senior grades are even available.

That said, if your GPA is a weakness, most schools will look more kindly on an upward-trending GPA than a downward-trending one.

The UCs do. If you completely bomb freshman year, that’s not good, but they only look at grades 10-11.

I think there was a time when Michigan disregarded freshman grades, back in the times when they re-calculate your GPA … that was many years ago. Perhaps there is where you got that impression. Not any more, Michigan now looks at your entire transcript/GPA from your high school. However, I wouldn’t worry so much if you have strong soph/junior/senior grades and a rigorous course-load.
