The course is called ‘Computer Science Honors’ but then the description says: “comparable to that of a first-year course offered in college and university computer science departments”. Does it count as an AP class?

Does it say AP? Do you take the exam in May? Is it a College Board-audited course?

If not, then it doesn’t “count” as an AP class. However, you can still be learning material equivalent to an introductory course in college even without it being designated as AP.

Holy crap, you people need to learn how to think for yourselves.

No. Not every “college-level” class is an AP, only the specific College Board courses with that designation.

no it’s not an AP but if it says it’s like an introductory college course then maybe you should consider signing up for the AP test.

Whether it is an AP class or not really doesn’t matter; what only matters is whether you are prepared to take the AP exam. Look at a sample AP exam and see whether your class will cover the material.

However, if your class doesn’t cover everything, you can still prepare for the exam if you self-study the extra material.

If you are concerned that the readers of your application will no consider this a college level course by the name along, you have the option of using some of the space in the “additional information” section of the Common Application.

In the case of my S, he has/will take online classes in Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus. Thankfully for him these math classes are considered, by name, to be above and beyond AP Calculus BC … even though his blasted HS won’t give him AP weighted credit for same.
