does this count as an extracurricular

Well our High School has this Gear-Up program, where we meet once or twice a week after school discussing college, and admissions, and have representatives from colleges come talk to us, and stuff like that. I was wondering If this was an extracurricular, and can I put it on my college application at all?

Thanks

If you’re asking this because you want to add another line onto your activities resume/application, then you’re asking for the wrong reasons.

Personally, I do not consider that an EC, unless the program includes extensive projects and effort.

I would say no. This sounds like information gathering. Unless there is more to it than you described.

lol No im not asking for that I was just wondering because I’ve been in the Gear up Program since 8th Grade and it really did assist us with College Issues, and we have had fundraisers and stuff like that, I was just wondering if I could put it on my college application because it is something that I dedicate too.

The Gear Up program is a nationally recognized service that assists kids by giving them info about college and holding summer programs. It most definitely is an extracurricular, and some schools even ask if you were part of a program like Upward Bound, Gear Up, etc.

Great answer Thanks.

Yes, it’s an EC. If it also is a program for low income or first generation college students, mentioning it on your app might help you get an extra look and even a tip from some colleges.
