NJ Governor’s school of sciences which sent 55 kids to HYP last year out of 80 went 0/6 with ED at Duke this year…all deferred

what happened?

Maybe those 6 kids in the class that applied early to Duke were the ones not qualified? Idk seems simple to me lol.

but governor’s school consists of the msot qualified students in NJ

Maybe Duke wasn’t the best fit for them? Duke had a 32% increase in ED applicants this year, so I bet they had a stronger applicant pool to chose from. Duke’s had the rep of being the place where Ivy rejects go, and I think that’s starting to change. Just my opinion though.

6 is a very small sample size. NJ Governor’s School might have the very best of NJ, but I’m sure it’s very possible that 6 would be unqualified for Duke.

Then, seeing as you said 55/80 go to HYP, the 6 Duke ED applicants probably knew they had little chance for HYP (no matter what people say, very few would choose Duke over HYP without a scholarship if they could get into both–there may be plenty of exceptions of course, but those exceptions are rare). Regardless of what school you’re coming from, it’s always going to be difficult for anyone to get into any top-20 school coming from the bottom third of his/her class.

it’s not a school, it’s a summer program

the kids who did this particular summer program sent 55/80 kids to hyp the previous year

the rest went to Duke, Hopkins, Penn, Columbia, etc lol

Duke reviews the applications of the students…not the “applications” of the schools or summer programs that graduate the students. You shouldn’t rest on the laurels of your program. The application process is personal and individual.

What knat said… most of us would never ED a place like Duke. You might find more at other governor’s schools, but science people aren’t interested in Duke.

Um there is no way 55/80 went to HYP… I think there were 9 Harvards, 11 Princetons, and then 9ish Yales, maybe the numbers are slightly off. But not 55.

Duke has never accepted any students from my school. Every year we have kids accepted to HYPS, but never Duke. I don’t know if Duke dislikes our school for some reason or their criteria is quite different than the others. Hopefully, I will break the nonacceptance tradition.

Huh? I chose Duke specifically for strength in science… I always related Duke, Stanford, MIT, Penn, Princeton, and Northwestern as the best elite schools for science.

Really? Given the levels of NIH funding that Duke gets I think they would beg to disagree…but then again, they are only the NIH right? What do they know about this “science” business ;)

gabby1116: you should talk to your GC about this if you haven’t already. Definitely a great source of information in terms of how to present yourself differently than those that didn’t get in in the years past.

feuxfollets, that’s not exactly what I was saying. Haha. “Most of us.” I now see why my state’s governor school had seminars about humility. Anyways, you can say whatever you’d like about Duke or any other school, but dukeblueduke’s spot on.
