Does UC Riverside have good opportunities for Computer Science BS, if you wanted to have a strong chance to go to MIT for MS?

I’m a senior and I’m planning to go to UC Riverside as it’s my best option right now. I would like to know how Computer Science is in UC Riverside and if I’m at a disadvantage by getting rejected to other UC campuses like UC San Diego and UCLA? I intend to transfer to an ivy league like MIT for post grad and am wondering whether my undergrad school being less popular would be an obstacle to getting accepted there?

I also wanna know if there’s good internship opportunities available and what companies come to UC Riverside. Is Apple one of them??

Thank you

First off, MIT is not an Ivy League school. Secondly, you would not be transferring to MIT for post grad, you’d be applying to a MS program. It is very competitive as you probably realize.

My advice is to go to UC Riverside and be the best student you can be and enjoy your college experience. If you go in to college with the goal of trying to get somewhere else, you will not be happy. Congrats on your acceptance to UC Riverside!

I think that this is exactly correct. UC Riverside is quite good for computer science. Congratulations on your acceptance!

Getting accepted into a strong master’s degree program will depend upon multiple things. You can improve your chances by doing very well as an undergraduate student, and by having very good internship and/or work experience. When I was a master’s degree student at a well known university (Stanford) the other students in the same program had come from a very, very wide range of undergraduate universities. Most (including me) had some work experience, which was typically obtained after getting a bachelor’s degree and before applying to graduate programs.

And you do not actually need a master’s degree to do well in computer science.

And of course neither MIT nor Stanford are in the Ivy League.

As an undergraduate student studying computer science, try to stay well ahead in your homework. There will be days when you have a bug in a program and it takes way longer than you think that it should to find the bug. This is normal. If you are way ahead in your homework when (not if) this happens you will not be in danger of suddenly falling behind. Also, take your math classes seriously. Pay attention to things like computational complexity and data structures and algorithms (this will make more sense as you get into relevant classes).

And I might be just a little bit jealous of you. It would be fun to be starting this all over again!!

Not sure if this link will work - but you can re set it if it depopulates.

In sort, in 2022, UCR graduated 146 CS Bachelors - at an average salary of $103.6K and median of $107.5K. 50% were employed and 43% looking - although I’m sure it’s much less now - that’s usually data at a certain point right after school ends.

Good luck.

UCR will make an excellent choice for computer science. Moreover, consider that CS tends to operate as a divergent fiield, for which a foundational education at a school such as UCR will prepare you for a wide variety of computing specialties, both in graduate school and your career. However, if you would like to attend an Ivy League graduate program, then you will need to eliminate MIT from consideration.
