Does UMD have closed majors?

Many colleges my S and I visited have closed majors-- you need to be majoring in the subject area in order to take classes above the 100 level. This is generally due to the size of the school and the popularity of the major. Does UMD have closed majors, or can anyone take any class in any area provided the meet the prerequisites?

I know that in the business school, for example, a student in another program can take classes but his/her priority for enrollment is below any business major that may want the class. I imagine other LED (limited enrollment programs) are similar but don’t know for sure.

Yes, 100-200 classes are held for direct admits and there’s open seats afterwards for the general population. 300-400 classes are restricted, have pre-reqs and rarely have open seats.

Check out the Testudo course catalog: [UM Testudo | Schedule Of Classes](http://www.sis.umd.edu/bin/soc?term=200808&crs=DEPT)

If it says that it’s closed to ___ majors or that you need permission of the department, then it is probably closed to whatever majors. Same with the higher courses that require the previous mentioned courses as pre-requisites.

However there ARE courses that are available to the general population from different schools that you can take as upper-level electives. I took an course from the environmental science and technology school that was a 400 level course, when I was only a freshman (I’m an engineering major). You just have to check on the Testudo catalog what the requirements are. And if you really want the class, you might be able to email the professor or school and they will give you permission to take the course.
