Does Umich consider legacy in the application?

Although the Umich website says they don’t consider legacy in the admission, why there’s a place on the common that asks if any people in your family members ever attended Umich? Is being a legacy work for the Umich application?

According to the common data set, it’s not considered.

It’s also on their website:

Legacy Applicants

Legacy status is not considered as part of U-M’s undergraduate admissions holistic review process.

So either they’re likely tracking for research purposes - another way to determine alumni engagement.

UM has no reason to lie about legacy admissions on their website. Best to go forward with the idea that being a legacy will not help for admissions.

They did until 2021 - on their 2021/2022 CDS, “Alumni Relationships” was “Considered”, however, on their 2022/2023 CDS it was not. So probably not, but it’s pretty recent.

So I assume that the Common App may not have yet been updated. They may also be using it to compare how dropping legacy preference is affecting yield.

There are other reasons that they may be interested in legacy status even though they do not consider it in admission decisions. For example, in addition to yield, they may want to know application volume from legacies. Or they may want to know if legacies differ in such things as choice of major, financial need, etc., which may affect their marketing both to potential applicants and alumni they solicit for donations.
