Heard in multiple random places that they only evaluate unweighted GPA to one decimal place for new applicants. Reason I’m asking is because I found out from their AO that my unweighted GPA from the Mich recalculation will be like 3.91 while it would be 3.98 on my high school transcript, so if it would be seen as a 3.9 regardless that would be better for me. Thanks
This goes under the heading of “it is what it is” and “don’t worry about things outside of your control.” You GPA is strong under both calculations. Better to focus your time and energy on the parts of the application that are not yet complete and where you can positively impact your chances of acceptance (ex. essay, getting strong LORs, etc.). Good luck!
Amplifying @happy1, there are questions to ask yourself at times like these:
Can I change it?
Can I influence it?
Does it change my decision or approach?
What else can I focus on that is within my ability to change or influence?
I don’t disagree, but from a technical standpoint, wouldn’t 3.91=3.9 and 3.98=4.0?
Look, your message is correct but that’s like 90% of the threads on this website so I think the question is still valid somewhat
Nothing would ever round to a perfect 4 because that would disadvantage 4.0 applicants who only had A’s
I made this thread because I saw someone on a different UMich thread say “they round to one decimal but 3.9 something will always round down to a 3.9” I didn’t invent something and ask about it, it seems to already be a fact for some people and I was just wondering if anyone else could confirm it?
Sorry. Don’t buy it.
Regardless, schools are looking at your transcript. They know if you got all As or got an A- somewhere. I hardly think they care. A very large number of high schools doesn’t even report GPA.
What do you not buy? Im just repeating what I’ve already heard and it makes sense to separate 3.9 applicants from 4.0 ones. My original question is just if mich rounds them or not
Here is the image of the original thread which led me to ask this question. I am simply passing on what this guy said and asking if anyone knows this to be true.
Michigan only uses absolute values when it recalculates the HS GPA. All A grades equal 4.0, there is no factor for +/-. This is explained on their admissions website.
Thanks, but I was asking about if they round the GPA to one decimal or not. The image I posted above is an exact reference of what I mean
People who have viewed their admissions file at UMich indicate the GPA is reported to one decimal.
Thanks a lot, that’s very helpful info. Where did you find that out?
I watched a couple of YouTube videos from UMich students who requested to see their admissions file.
Thanks for finding that out, looks like I’ll be a 3.9 applicant regardless so I think my cause for worry is gone
You’re fine, GPA-wise. It’s not going to be the difference maker.
Yeah, thanks again for finding an answer to this since I know it was really specific of a question
