does UNSW awards count for anything?

Is credit/distinction in UNSW assessments worth mentioning in common app? Under activities? Do they event count as activities?

And is it worth mentioning a club that you were in in secondary school even if you didn’t have any leadership positions?

Depending on the schools you are applying to, it may be worth mentioning. I wouldn’t mention credits and distinctions in the common app if you’re applying to selective schools though, as they really aren’t anything to be proud of (no offense). I have numerous High Distinctions on UNSW comps and I don’t even think I would mention them in my common app to the top schools like Harvard, Stanford etc. if it is any help

And to answer your question, they aren’t really “activities” as they fall under the academic category. So it would count as a major award/achievement (depending on the level of achievement). Clubs such as debating, sports, model UN, newspapers etc. are usually worth mentioning even though you have not received any leadership positions, they are all valuable ECs

thanks  do you think it’s worth mentioning for cornell and amherst?

When did you attend the University of New South Wales? Do you have an Aussie accent, mate?

(Reminds me of a joke: Q. What did the pirate say on his 80th birthday? A. Aye, matey!)

@skisse, definitely don’t put credits on your application to Cornell and Amherst, to be honest I wouldn’t even list them on your application regardless of what university you are applying to. With Distinctions, it’s all up to you whether to put them on or not. Remember, the top US colleges only takes around 5 Australian students based on academics a year (according to what I’ve read), so the people that you are up against probably are applying with High Distinctions at the very least, if not IMO medals or something crazy like that.

Then again, if you’re a recruited athlete that’s an entirely different story. Most Australians get into US colleges through sport recruitment

Thanks for replying! I’ve decided not to include any because they seem pretty pathetic compared to the academic awards of many others. Also I’m Singaporean, but I took the Australian assessment because my school encouraged it :)

@skisse I was just assuming since you took the UNSW assessments haha, but regardless the competition for Singaporean applicants is probably even more cut throat than Australia and the number admitted may be just 1-2 a year.
