Does variety of classes matter?

I’m currently in my second semester at a California Community College and am taking a lot of intro classes: Pol Sci 1, English 1, Film 1 (Film Appreciation), Psych 1.

Do colleges want to see more interesting/advanced/eccentric classes on your transcript? Obviously a college is looking for a stellar GPA, are they also looking for a certain type of course-load? Certain types of classes? Or class progressions?

If you are planning on the UC system, I suggest you post this on the UC Transfer forum.

If applying to other schools, my comment would be this: the best plan is to check the recommended curriculum at your target school(s) for your intended or likely major. Follow that as closely as possible.

For some majors, say Engineering, interesting and eccentric classes would not be the right plan. Rather, the recommended sequence of math/physics/chemistry and perhaps the English composition/writing gened course. For other majors, the best courseload would be different.

Thanks for your response. I am currently looking to apply to both Columbia School of General Studies as well as some UCs. Thanks much for your response… anyone else have any insight into this? Is it bad to have so many “Intro” courses on one’s transcript, I guess it’s normal for a freshman…

When you are a freshman, it is not bad to have a lot of intro courses. It is expected. You don’t want to keep dabbling in all new things at the “first course” level, though. Continue with some that interest you, so you go a little deeper in some fields.

That is just generic advice, though. I would need to know more about your planned major, if you know it. And my advice does not pertain to the UC system - they have their own expectations, which you may already know. Otherwise, post on that sub-forum.
