So I made a previous post stating that my brother’s efc and mine was different. I realized that I put maybe on my application for work study and he put no, so I was wondering if that affected my efc?
Asking to be considered for work study would NOT change your EFC. The most likely difference is in income or assets that you and your brother have…that are not the same.
My brother does not work and I do not also? We both do not have any assests so I don’t know what’s the difference? Could my EFC vary from different states since I signed up for financial aid in more than 1 state?
Did you check line by line on both of your FAFSA forms? That is what you need to do. Check EACH entry…each one…and make sure they are entered correctly.
What is the difference in amount between your EFCs?
I did do that and everything is exactly the same. His EFC is 0 and mine is 1324.
Same number of people in the household? Same number in college?
Yes! I had a confusion but I misread it for dependency, which I have no children.
I’m just worried that maybe an EFC of 0 and 1321 could possible affect the outcome of the Gates program choosing me as a scholar.
Doesn’t Gates just require that you be Pell eligible? Efc of $0 is eligible, but so is $1321.
The difference shouldn’t be that high unless you have $5000k in assets your brother doesn’t have. My kids’ EFC were within a couple hundred dollars because one had some savings and the other didn’t.
If anything, my brother has a bank account with savings and I don’t? I’m still really confused on how we have different EFC, mine being higher. Would it vary from state giving me a higher efc? Would the income of 44k in California be different than an income of 44k in Chicago, resulting 2 different EFC? Or no matter where, there is a nation income to determine what your EFC is?
No. If you are talking about the EFC generated by filing FAFSA, it make no difference if the same parents filed with the same information in California or Chicago. The information might be different (taxes paid, for example) but if the parent lives in California and files the same for both children, the EFC should be the same.
If you are filling in the NPC from different schools then yes, the EFCs from those schools could be different, but not the federal EFC.
Are you talking about the actual FAFSA EFC? Or are you talking about your net costs at colleges?
Actual FAFSA EFC.
So you both have the same parent information on the FAFSA? And neither of you has work income or assets?
And your brother’s EFC is $0?
I still think there must be a difference on the FAFSAs somewhere.
I’m assuming parent income is under $25,000. Did you both select that parent can file a 1040A? Or that household qualified for federal means tested benefit? Or that parent is dislocated worker?
That would be the questions qualifying for auto zero EFC.
So check if you answered the questions the same as your brother (if his answers are correct).
Does your FAFSA ask about assets, but his skips them?
So I rechecked my FAFSA with my brother for the 4th time and I even switched our parents around (parent 1 = dad and parent 2 = mom) so it would exactly match for sure and it’s still the same? I don’t know exactly whats different between mine and his because we both put the exact same thing which is shown in our SAR so I don’t know what the problem is??? I even called the FAFSA number and the best option they gave me was to look at the formula and told me with parts affect the number of the EFC. I checked everything and my number is still the same… I don’t know what to do,
" I don’t know what to do, "
wait until you get your actual FA packages from the colleges you are applying to.
then the differences[ if they exist} can be brought up with the FA offices.
This EFC would affect the amount of Pell Grant to which this student is entitled.
I’m hoping the financial aid office at one of the schools will see something and make the correction.
This really makes no sense…if everything is identical on the forms.
So do you know if the efc number is set in stone? Is there a possibility that colleges see it as 0 and I don’t?
There is no possibility that a college will see a $1300 and see that as a $0.
I noticed that there was the section with scholarships/tuition and my brother had a number on his while I did not so I was wondering if that was a possibility of our difference? Also is there any way FASFA can get both my brother and my application and compare them both to see the difference?
