Dog with cracked pad

We have a dog who seems prone to cracked pads, this leads to limping and licking as well as me trying any remedy I can think of from emollients and a sock over it to crazy glue. The cracks is similar to a heel crack only deeper and across the entire width of the pad. He’s very very active, I’d love to know anything anyone else has tried which has helped it heal faster.

My dog used to have cracked pads. I soaked the paws in wam water for about 30 minutes and applied vaseline. It seemed to help.

Musher’s Secret. https://www.chewy.com/s?rh=brand_facet%3AMusher%27s+Secret&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Musher’s%20Secret-Hard&utm_term=musher’s%20secret&utm_content=Musher’s%20Secret

We;ve used Musher secret as well. We have also purchased a 4 pack of fleece booties to thwart licking. She doesn’t like it at first because it needs to be snug but she learned to tolerate it.

The cracks can become infected, mildly or severely, which leads to more licking. If it continues, get the vet to check it out. The antibiotic is cheap or they can have a shot of it which lasts 10-14 days.

Another vote for Musher’s Secret with caution that your dog can slip (and potentially get hurt) on the wood or tile floors in the house. We apply in the winter, in the mudroom, just before going out.

Bag Balm which you should be able to find locally.

CC is amazing, I’ll be trying these ASAP

If your dog is running around on rough surfaces a lot (trails, gravel, dirt, etc) you might also want to try dog booties. There’s all kinds out there, I linked an example below. We used a lightweight one for our dog when we were doing a lot of trail hiking.

I’m impressed people have dogs that will actually wear the booties. We tried them repeatedly with one of our dogs. First off, the dogs reaction when we first put them on was “pee your pants” funny. =)) But then, the dog just wouldn’t keep them on. Maybe we were pushover dog parents. Our dog was a bit “independent”.

Definitely true! They seem to settle down a bit faster outside the house though once they get distracted by other stuff.

The price of the booties is worth the cost just for the laughs.

My dogs freeze and act weird when all four are on. Just one boot gives 5 seconds of laughs and then they move on.

When D’s dog has cracked pads, she soaks them in 1/2 cup Epsom Salt and 1 gallon warm water for 5-10 minutes. Then she pats them dry. She does this 2-4 times a day. After soaking and drying, D applies Musher’s Secret and little socks that have grips on the bottom. Her dog was a city dog for several years, and as hard as we tried to keep her off of freshly salted sidewalks in the winter, it was really a problem. She is also a dog that needs lots of exercise, so running hard was tough on her paws during the winter months.

Good luck!

Does the dog wear those grippy socks outside or just around the house?

The dog just wears those grippy socks around the house. The Musher’s Secret makes her paws slippery on hard wood floors.

She did buy those expensive booties for wearing outdoors. She was somewhat cooperative.
