Dogs, and dog people

It isn’t often you find a truly uplifting news story these days, but when you do, it’s probably about dogs.

This story made my day.

I just want to say that our goldendoodle is doing well post op from GVD gastodilitation volvulus. Had we not read about the symptoms of retching without production on google we would never have know it was a life threatening emergency and got her in the ER in 2 hours.

Apparently now in many big breeds with big barrels chests they do a prophylactic surgery- a gastropexy (pin stomach to wall) when they go in for spay or neuter. Our dog is older and they were not doing it 9 years ago here.

So - I just wish I would have know about the prophylaxis and the symptoms before this week. I thought it was only Great Danes, but apparently not.

Happy to report she is doing very well with cone of shame and all.

Our labradoodle also had GDV, aka Bloat, surgery 3 years ago when he was 9.
The symptoms came on so suddenly; mouth foaming, abdomen rapidly distended and and anxious pacing and unable to get comfortable.
I had just read an article describing Bloat so I recognized the symptoms and rushed him to a veterinary hospital.
Rockymtnhigh2, we are both so lucky that we recognized the symptoms and acted quickly. A friend’s dog developed Bloat but they waited overnight and the dog died.
So glad your pup is doing well!

My son got the prophylactic bloat surgery for his big dog too (when pup about 18 months, I think). We’ve had big dogs for 20+ years (not now) and bloat was always a worry.

It’s been out of stock but I’m planning on getting this welcome mat. I just love it.

I absolutely love that! I don’t suppose they have one for cats?

Love that idea… warns people of pets that might try to dash out when the door is opened. If there were a cat version, I’d consider it from my kid who has 2 cats.

Not exactly like that colorful one posted by @abasket, but there are some for cat lovers too - a few are on Amazon.

Thanks! I have a cute one that I could customize with all of our cats’ names and same color schemes cats. I just really liked the flowers on that one

We have an incredible dog, Toby, a standard poodle. He’s very sociable and loves shopping at Home Depot and other dog friendly places.

He also loves when we harvest oysters and waits patiently knowing I’ll give him the feet.

He also likes it when I pull out the sous vide machine, because he knows what’s going to happen. Apparently meat juices enhance the flavor of dry dog food.

You couldn’t ask for a more gentle dog. He’s a big boy, 80 pounds, but plays well with everyone, including his 10 pound brother in law.

I’d rather be stuck in an elevator with the ugliest dog, than the prettiest person.

Our goldendoodle inadvertently became a PSA (public service announcement). She is still in the cone of shame 11 days post op. We are taking small walks each morning and the neighbors all ask about her story. We tell them about the apparently not well known GVD problem. I guess she is a service dog in a sense.

Never doubt the intelligence, empathy or will of a dog.

My neighbor a few houses down has the cat version. Specifically it says, “Welcome to our home. I hope you like cats.”
