Anyone ever have a dog on prozac? Did it help?
I have not but I’ve known a couple of people who did. Seemed to help with anxiety.
A few of our fosters were on Prozac while they were with us. Mostly ones that had severe separation anxiety. We tried to use it as a stop-gap measure while we worked on behavior modification (by trained professionals, not myself!) and most were eventually able to come off. A few were adopted out and still on the meds- not sure how long they stayed on.
We’ve never had a negative experience and it almost always seemed to help.
We put our dog on Prozac for obsessive licking. It reduced her licking about half and now she is off the medication and doing better.
We had one dog on Prozac once she started to become senile and anxious. After she passed, we had to start another on it as she developed severe anxiety even though she’s still got another dog in the house with her. She just hasn’t dealt well with losing the first dog. Both times it helped.
Walmart is the place to fill the prescriptions. Such a first world problem, trying to find the best price on doggie anxiety meds! CVS wanted to charge us $50/month for generic prozac without insurance. Walmart was $4.
My daughter used Prozac on her dog, who is anxious and also aggressive. It helped a bit with the anxiety, but the vet warned that the downside is that they could also lose their inhibition to bite when they’re on drugs like that. So if your dog is at all snappy or aggressive, that could become more of a problem on Prozac because they’re less inhibited.
I have a terrier with anxiety who sees a vet who specializes in behavioral issues. He has done well on Paxil, with Trazadone added on, every 4 hours. He has done very well. A thundershirt has also been helpful.
Yes, depending on the issue a Thundershirt can do a world of good.
I’m starting my dog on it. He is way too attached to me and my husband is about ready to get rid of him!
My dog seems a bit more calm since starting his meds. He still is overly attached to me, but he doesnt freak out as much when other family comes near me.
