Dogs have a magnetic poop compass

I thought this article was an Onion spoof at first, but it’s being reported in the major media sources, including NatGeographic, Time, etc.

According to a study just published by German & Czech researchers, dogs are sensitive to the earth’s magnetic field and prefer to align themselves N-S when they poop. And you wondered all this time why they do that walk in circles dance before they do their business…
[Dogs Align With Earth?s Magnetic Field When Pooping, But Scientists Have No Idea Why - International Science Times](http://www.isciencetimes.com/articles/6617/20140103/dogs-align-earths-magnetic-field-poop-squat-magnetoreception.htm)

I’ve been watching my dog the last few days, but his poop compass seems to be broken. Has anyone observed a N-S poop propensity in their pooch?

I’ll have to watch on our next walk. Still, what I notice is that I have a slightly crazy dog that sometimes goes around and around in circles before he pees. He does lift his leg and mark if we’re on a walk but letting him out in the yard first thing in the morning, and sometimes at other times of day or night, he’ll do the crazy spinning and then squat and pee.

I thought the study was crap.

^^^^^Groan . . . .

My dog is a true Southern Belle…she always aligns herself S-N when she poops.

So, dogs can replace compasses? I can’t tell the difference between news and satire lately. Everything is suspect. The other news of the day that apparently was not satire was about at least 50 people burning themselves throwing boiling water in the air outside in the cold.

@lizard, too funny! Lol

I threw boiling water into the air the other day…with the wind :).

It was…underwhelming.

Pooping dog compass as seen on TV. Comes with a poop bag. Unless you order now…we will send you two poop bags ( shipping and handling extra).

Good grief… I need to get back to work…

My 16mo male dog pees like a puppy, ( he doesn’t lift his leg, but he doesn’t squat like a female dog either), he just stretches out.

Haven’t noticed the alignment.

Good to know if I am ever lost in the wilderness with my dog.

My dog poops in a park right under the George Washington Bridge. Can’t say more than that.

My house faces North so when my dog is doing his business in the backyard I do notice the N-S alignment. Sometimes, he faces the rose bushes planted on the S side so those must be the unstable MF conditions the article is talking about. I notice the N-S alignment too when we’re heading North so just like some pointed out, it may be a good theory to test when you’re lost in the desert.

My dog is a true Southern Belle…she always aligns herself S-N when she poops

lol…the big bad North gets the business end!

Love it!

Now, I’ve got to pay attention to what my doggies do.

My dog’s is broken. She’ll just turn away from you, no matter where you’re standing. If you move, she’ll move. We think she’s self-conscious about the whole thing ;)

The only thing I notice is the preferred spots they gravitate too. Makes cleanup when I’m not out there with them a lot easier :D

My 10 month old pooch has gravitated to our bed of pachysandra to do her business. I haven’t noticed a N-S orientation.

I thought of this thread when I took my dog for a walk a while ago. Her compass is apparently defective as she did her business bottom facing East then sniffed around for a few seconds and went again bottom facing North.

My dog went east -west for his most recent.

When our dog was a puppy, whenever Mr B would start to mow the lawn, the pup would run in front of the lawnmower, stop, squat and do his business. Irritated the heck out of Mr B! The pup was also really slow about doing his business in the mornings, taking his sweet time to sniff and wander around, which also made Mr B mad. To speed things up, Mr taught the dog to go on command. “Go poop!” and the pup would go to get his treat. Do not recall if it was N-S or some other alignment.

Mine seems to have no preference direction-wise. She does usually insist on finding taller grass or leaves or bushes. She’s not one to just poop out in the open. This makes for a tough go in the snow. She will go from being as regular as a clock to holding it for two days.
