Doing porn to pay for Duke, SMH.

On The View, there was just a young woman 18 years old who has chosen to make pornographic movies to pay for her 60K/year tuition at Duke. Says her parents are supportive of this decision. She’d rather do this than be saddled with student loans. She says she has been watching porn since she was 12 years old.
Ugh.
WDYT?

So?
Honestly, she’s almost certainly better off doing porn than what many undergrads are doing on a typical Friday night. At least in porn, she has a much lower chance than being raped, contracting an STI, or being black out drunk.

Students have been doing nude modeling and such for years to pay bills. I guess I don’t see how this is that much different.

Then again, I don’t really see consenting porn as anything negative so YMMV.

I pretty much take the same attitude as Romangypsyeyes on this, though I would not like it. Hate seeing young people make these decisions before they have more info, maturity experience about what the want to do in life It’s usually the non college bound kids, particularly to such selective schools that are known to make these kinds of choices.

I think it’s a terrible idea–but it’s even a worse idea to tell anybody you’re doing it.

Romani, you seem to be under the impression that the porn industry is somehow a regulated and reputable field. I can assure you that this is a comical misunderstanding of the scum that populates this business. I very much doubt that the chance of being raped is higher at your average college party than it is at a Los Angeles porn flick cattle call and the accompanying casting couch nonsense. Look, I get that you want to seem open minded but the sad fact is that most porn actresses are drugged out of their minds and are so numb and desperate that the use of the word consent is barely applicable. Sigh.

The LA Times ran a piece not that long ago about a porn star who is a senior at UCLA. Not a big deal. It notes people say hi to her on campus. (BTW, she’s a lot more obvious, given she has large implants and long blonde hair.) It’s a big deal at Duke because it’s in the South and she was outed against her will and this gives people a chance to moralize into empty air.

Well, as long as people say hi to the obvious porn star I guess that makes it okay .LOL!

Poor decision, imo. Not going to be a big hit with prospective employers. If she opts to omit this from her resume, she is withholding employment information-- for obvious reasons. I can not imagine that most parents, of a son or daughter, would support this.

I get the consenting adults argument, but I find that statement above to be very disturbing. There’s nothing healthy imo about a child watching porn.

H and I listened to her on the Howard Stern show the other day. Very disturbing. She is very messed up. Bless her heart.

Hmmm. I wonder if people would be as surprised to hear a boy saying that he had been watching porn since he was 12 years old.

This is a big issue in my mind. The statistics vary, but I’ve read that up to 100% of porn actors will become infected with herpes as a result of working in the California porn industry. A very high percentage will become infected with gonorrhea, HPV, chlamydia and even syphilis. The actors and actress are not routinely tested for all STDs, so many are undiagnosed and possibly asymptomatic. Theses actors and actresses have sex with partners outside of their employment, and don’t you believe that they aren’t spreading these diseases around. To me, it’s pretty outrageous that the industry is not required to make their employees use condoms to protect them from harm.

I see nothing “freeing” about being required to perform unprotected sex in order to keep one’s job.

I know I’m old and I recognize that times are certainly changing but this is one area that I will NEVER be liberal minded about. It’s sick and sad and slightly suspicicous that such a young woman has no problem with doing porn when obviously she is very intellligent and likely could have had a bright future. Maybe she still will.
Sorry, I just do NOT get the desire to do this. I’d be saddled with student loans for the rest of my days rather than that. It’s bad enough how rampant sex is anyway, sorry that’s how I feel, but to do it for pay and for public consumption…gross.

This is a weird story. (Well, geez, VeryHappy, no s***.) Performing in porn movies is, for most of us and our children, just plain not on the table. I could see being an “escort” over doing porn.

OTOH, when I was in college I worked in the Classics Department, mimeographing and collating. So what do I know.

I would also state emphatically that it is not healthy for any 12 year old boy to be watching porn.

Not the model you want your sons and daughters to view as normal during these formative years.

She is old enough to make her own mistakes and I have trouble seeing this as anything other than a mistake unless porn is the career she wants to follow. If so, who needs college. I wonder if watching porn at 12 somehow legitimized porn in her mind. No 12 year old should be watching porn. Sad.

So, I’m not convinced the consenting adults arguments even applies. This is not about sex or talent. Its about naïve young women being used by sleazebag porn producers. The job generally goes to the dumbest and most compliant.

Her parents were initially shocked (duh!) and are now supportive. Also, interesting is that her dad is a doctor and the family stopped paying her tuition for unknown reasons.

You can google Shelley Lubben and read her many comments about the porn industry. In her view, this industry is not benign and its detrimental effects are widespread and affect more people than the actors and actresses.

Wasn’t she getting FA? I wonder if she reported this income to Duke (or the IRS).

I very much agree that no 12-year-old should be watching porn. But I have a pessimistic estimate of how many 12-year-olds (especially boys) are, in fact, watching porn. It’s gotten way, way easy for them to do so.
