Well I thought I had heard it all but this one was new to me:
Too funny.
This article, while well intentioned, reminds me of that famous Truman Capote quote:
“That’s not writing, that’s typing”.
ps - I know he said it about Keroac and no I do not agree
Great article. Too often students and families get caught up in prestige and what others believe to be the “perfect” school for that student , and use those opinions to guide their college search . The college search should be guided internally not externally.
I don’t know we listened to most of a CD of On the Road without realizing it was on shuffle.
A lot of great nuggets of advice. You should post on the college selection forum. Good reading for every high school student and their parents.
Wise advice from one of the article’s readers comments:
Very good. I just forwarded this to a bunch of friends.

That got a good guffaw out of me this morning :). I did the same thing with Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big Magic” book. Had no idea until at one point several hours in I was like, “Isn’t the boyfriend trapped in Brazil? What’s going on!”
But I thought 17 year olds were experts on everything from college admissions to how to prepare for a medical residency in obstetrics. At least that is what some claim here on CC.
Many folks pretend to not be participating in the “rat race” but actually are. Or if they aren’t they likely realized it was too much work to bring their dull kid up to speed.
^^Jeez. Maybe they just don’t want to hang out with people who refer to kids as “dull”.
