We have an old car which our D has been driving and we need a way to dispose of it. It still runs but is half way across the country from me.

What is the best way to figure out who to donate a car to and how to go about it?

D lives in eastern Pennsylvania if that helps. Love my kids but they are not good at figuring out these things. I just want to get rid of this car. It’s a 1999 and has 240,000 miles so it lived a great life for us.

We donated one of our old cars to our local PBS station. Most PBS stations have such programs for fund-raising. We just called them and they came and picked it up and took it away. There was some minor paperwork. Easy.

We did the same thing.
Many charities contract through a service that will pick up the car, even if it isn’t running, sell it at auction & give the bulk of the proceeds to the charity.
( there are usually links on their website)
We got rid of a car that had been sitting in our driveway for years that way.
( H had been saying he was going to get it running for one of the kids to drive - but eventually I realized I had a better chance of being mistaken for Halle Berry)
They sold it for more than I thought, so I was able to get quite a nice deduction!

We donated 2 running cars to these guys. I took pictures, and I was hoping you could read the charity name and phone number on the truck, but it’s not fully visible. It was a childrens’ cancer charity I think, and they sent us a tax form later that represented the money they got for the car at auction which was what we were allowed as a tax deduction. I was surprised how much it was. (similar experience to EK4 apparently)

There is a dog in a shelter in Penn that I want to adopt, if she can make it out to Seattle, I will get rid of the car for you!
( & we are having an early spring! )
Just thought I’d ask.
;)

Thanks for all the suggestions! The car does still run and I think pretty reliable, although for someone willing to put some maintenance into it. Unfortunately the slugs I have for children don’t seem to remember that occasionally cars need to be fixed.

We are coming to visit at the end of this month. I’ll have a plan in place for us to get rid of this very well loved car.

We have donated 3 vehicles to our technical school, which uses them for a variety of reasons, like training their auto body students. I recently learned one of the vehicles (the oldest, purchased in 1996!) is being used for their Recycled Rides program. I believe it’s a national program.

I think your potential tax deduction could differ depending on the organization - not 100%sure on that (haven’t done my taxes yet; that’s on the agenda for next week).

I believe it depends on what the organization does with the vehicle - for example, if they sell it, then your deduction is limited to the gross proceeds from the sale. But if they make improvements to it, then the value of the vehicle (and your deduction) could be higher.

Notrichenough–a pox on you for mentioning that jingle.

Also, there’s a lot of controversy over exactly what sort of charity they are; it’s more of a proselytizing organization than one that helps “disadvantaged” children.

We donated an old (almost two decades) pass-through-family-members car to the Red Cross. They were great to deal with and picked up the car at our vehicle service station’s lot (where we had had it towed for an estimate, based on which we decided to donate it).

They met us there, we did the (very little) paperwork, and we later got a statement that the vehicle was worthy of an $800 tax deduction.

We’ve done this a couple of times - once to the National Kidney Foundation and a second time to KarsForKids. Both times, the car was picked up at our house and they gave us a receipt for the car. But I don’t believe they indicated the value of the car - it was left to us to determine what the value of the car was and to claim this accordingly on our taxes. We used Kelly’s blue book value - but I was never really sure if that was the right thing to do.

We now have another car we need to get rid of - debating on whether we should try selling it or just donate it.
