I have a large, 60”x40”, granite top table that I’d like to give away but I cant find any takers. The problem is that the table weighs a couple of hundred pounds so it would take several strong men to move it.
Ive listed it, free, on our local swap n sell board but no bites.
I’m hoping someone here might know of a charity that would pick up this heavy table, or any idea of how I can find another home for this albatross of a table??
Habitat for humanity Re:Store?
Try Freecycle or the Craigslist free section (I’d start with Freecycle). (You might try to sell it for a low price on Craigslist, you never know!)
This piece of granite is large enough for a kitchen island. Do you know if it is possible to get more granite of the same style? If so, you could advertise it as a granite top for a kitchen island and then mention where they can buy matching granite. The stuff costs a fortune, but advertising it as something unusual (table) is going to draw less interest than advertising it as a island top.
As an island top I think you should be able to get some money for it and not have to just give it away. Try for a hundred bucks, anyway.
Thanks for all th suggestions. I have listed it on craigslistetc. And also tried habitat for humanity. Unfortunately, the HFH near us doesn’t pick up and its too heavy for us.
Earl, your suggestion is a good one, I will try that and let you all know if that works.
Try “Nextdoor”
My experience has been excellent with Craigslist under the free section. Make it clear in the listing that when people respond they should tell you when they can come and that they must have a vehicle and the muscle available to move it themselves.
In the end, I’ve paid a junk hauler to get rid of stuff I just couldn’t get rid of any other way.
When I say my experience has been excellent, I mean that people with real need are reading the free listings and finding a way to pick things up and take them away. I find that is much more satisfying than selling something cheaply or paying someone to take it away.
I have listed thsi table w Freecycle, Craigs list, Nextdoor and our local area’s Swap website and made clear it is free but that they need to bring muscle to move it. No takers.
I am surprised because its a lovely table and a great piece of granite, I really want to donate and not just have someone haul it to a landfill. Ackkk. Frustrating, I thought it would be snapped up.
Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I do appreciate it.
200 pounds for such a large table implies that the granite layer is very slim. Maybe that’s why there are no takers. That table should weigh at least 300 pounds.
You might also try FB marketplace. I had an island, with countertops and cupboards and a cut out for a range, I think I sold it for $100, I had multiple people interested. I like Earl’s idea to list it as an island top!
We struggled to give away bulky/heavy pieces too. Even the companies that would pick up wanted everything relocated into the garage which proved difficult as DH was living elsewhere. We actually moved pieces that we couldn’t get rid of to another state and then ended up putting stuff on the curb with a “free” sign. Our largest piece was taken in under 15 minutes. A young man walked by, took a picture to text some friends, and then a group of guys appeared within 5 minutes to take it away. (Hooray for living adjacent to a university).
BunsenBurner, I wasn’t clear, the granite is quite thick, prob weighs closer to 350-400 lbs. I was using,”couple of hundred pounds”, in a very broad sense.
Oh good. I was thinking that you specified the weight in the ad!
A couple of hundred pounds is just not that heavy, certainly not several strong men heavy LOL, is it advertised as difficult to handle? Is it in a basement or upper floor? do the legs come off as with normal tables? It is baffling to me that you can’t give it away. when we moved house I was shocked what people would actually buy but it was a fairly frugal state. So you have tried selling it rather than giving it away? Try local classifieds vs craigslist. You jut might get more serious shoppers not looking for crap.
Sybylla, I am bewildered too. Top comes off, table is in kitchen, right by the door.
When I first listed, I was asking $150, gradually lowering the price till now its free.
I’m leaving the listings up for another week and then I’m following Earl: ill put it up as an island top;)
I had a friend who couldn’t sell her super nice patio furniture for really cheap. Think everyone thought something must be wrong with it. So she raised the price. Sold immediately.
Heck that could BE an island with a converted dresser underneath or shelves or whatever. Back when I was crafty I’d have snagged it!
