I’m in my 3rd year at the University of North Georgia. I’m currently a Physical Education major with a teacher cert. This is my third major though. Because of all my major changes I have a bunch of useless classes I’ve taken. I’m not sure if I’m even halfway done yet with a cool. Currently, I work as a gymnastics coach while in school. I absolutely love my job. I have absolutely no motivation for school anymore and really want to quit. I would be perfectly happy continuing coaching. I don’t care at all about being rich and famous. I just want to be happy with life. I’m stuck on what I should do.
finish your degree (if its not drowning you in debt) , at least in the future you will have options. You cut off a lot of possibilities when you don’t finish.
Its much harder to go back years later. The “useless” classes might prove useful years down the road in some way.
^this x1000. When it all comes down to it, even having the maybe-seemingly-meaningless-now piece of paper that says University of North Georgia is far superior than not having it. You are already over the hump, so to speak, and it is definitely much harder to get back into the college mindset after years, maybe decades, have passed. Spend the year and a half, get what you’ve earned, and then you can put college in your rear view mirror.
What happens if you lose your current job? Do you think having that degree would help you get another? This is exactly what happened to my mom, except about 30 years after leaving school and pursuing engineering as a career. She took a few years off to raise her kids, got work for a few years doing so-so stuff, but found getting back into industry was very difficult as it only took a few clicks of the mouse to see if someone actually graduated from their program. She was only a semester away from finishing, and it wound up being an enormous chore (and fairly costly) to finish her degree, as none of her course credits were still valid. Wound up having to find a program that offered “life experience” credit.
…“I don’t care at all about being rich and famous…”
Did you think you’d become rich and famous with a P.E. degree? Do what you want but I think you are being short sighted. What happens if you become injured or become too old to coach? Do you receive any benefits? At least as a college student you probably have health insurance. If you get a bachelor’s degree in ANY field you will at least be eligible for lots of jobs. It may not even matter what your major is.
You only have one year left of the misery. Weigh that against an entire life time of reduced earnings and difficult job searches.
When you secured your job as a gymnastics coach you were probably a college student. Being in college is a whole lot different than having dropped out of college. If you loss your current job you could find that getting re-hired as a drop out is more difficult than you would have thought. If you finish, you may be competitive for even better coaching jobs.
