Don't Discount One Year of Junior College!

I have now heard of 3 students, mediocre (B/C) grades in high school, who have been accepted at USC after a year at a jc. I find this a bit disconcerting, when my D, who was a 3.8, 28 ACT with stellar recommendations from USC alumni, a legacy (father attended), and had great leadership and EC’s, didn’t get admitted last year as a class of '08 graduate. She is very happy at her college and wouldn’t change a thing, but it got me thinking…is it because USC needs the $$$ (all will pay full price), or are there that many spots that open up during freshman year? And if this can happen at USC, can it happen at other top schools? Should we all rethink the 4 year college thing?

Maybe they can play basketball. I hear the team has lots of openings, from the coach on down…

They let in Lil Romeo. College admissions is f’ed up.

After a year of junior college, your high school records matter a lot less. They probably did very well in junior college. Plus, they could have had good SAT/ACT score. Your daughter’s ACT score was below the 25th percentile for USC, while her GPA is the same as the average GPA for USC which makes her overall stats below average for USC.
