No feeding, no walking, no housebreaking, no crate training…and no dog sitters ever needed.

Fluffy therapy

Studying for finals can be stressful, but UC Davis has come up with a unique way to relieve some of that pre-exam anxiety. PUPPIES! Every year during finals week, UC Davis Student Health brings puppies and other foster dogs to the Memorial Union so our students can de-stress by sharing some love with some fluffy friends. In addition to this fun tradition, UC Davis Student Health has several other programs designed to help students thrive throughout their college experience.

Some schools, like Bradley University, even have Service Animal training programs:

My daughter’s college has periodic pet therapy days (and a few dogs who hang out on campus regularly with their owners, who are employees, and it seems well known that students are welcome to come hang with the dogs at any time). The pet-the-pet days are hugely popular, especially during exam weeks.

Before Covid days hit, my love’s library had a program where the little kids would read to rescue dogs (impoverished neighborhood, with few resources, many littles falling between the cracks) - it was a tremendous hit!

Dogs and cats are magic!

One of my favorite pics of our son was taken by another cadet his sophomore year when West Point brought in some therapy animals for stress relief:

He has the goofiest, happy smile on his face. He just looks so young, and I can see his thought balloon, “Look, Mom! I have a bunny!” Other pics show a horde of other uniformed cadets holding puppies, kitties, bunnies, or petting larger animals. It’s clear they’re having a blast, but the uniforms are so incongruous. It looks like Army Day at a petting zoo.

(He would have kept that rabbit if it had fit under his beret.)

This can be great for many students, but as a person who suffers from very severe pet allergies I hope these sessions are held outside or in a separated area.

Northeastern has Cooper. He’s adorable and they have birthday parties for him.

This is the best thread of the day! Adorable!

Luke passed away, but has been followed by another staff dog. Student Services also runs a puppy event during finals weeks, where the dogs are out on campus for hugs.

Daughter’s school has a dog AND a horse, and sometimes a llama…
