I’m meeting with my college counsellor this Sunday, and he wants me to draw up a tentative list of colleges I’m looking at. But I don’t know what’s within my reach and not. I have to come up with about 12 names. I’m wondering if you guys can give me any suggestions, then accordingly I’ll check them out before I meet my counsellor. Just want an idea of a good college with the grades I get :

Is this counselor from your school or is it a private counselor?

If this is a private counselor, how much experience does he/she have with students from your school, and with the colleges/universities that your family would like you to go to?

If you are serous about design and/or theatre tech, does the counselor have experience placing students in design programs and/or theater conservatory programs?

Not on everyone’s radar for tech/design: Columbia College in Chicago.

Projected major: As of now, either Sociology, Womens Studies or English
The money part is fine, I’m an only child, my parents have saved up

None of us here know enough about international admissions to be able to predict your chances anywhere. If your school often has students apply to colleges and universities in the US, then your own counselor will be the best to advise youon your options. If you are the first from your school, you should also read through the information at EducationUSA.state.gov and chat with the advisors at the center closest to where you live.

Are you female, or just interested in Women’ Studies? If you are female, take a look at the women’s colleges.

What 12 schools are you currently considering? Are these are schools that your class-mates in prior years have had some success in getting admitted to? And enjoyed attending?

It’s hard to evaluate someone who doesn’t have actual scores yet. Estimates and actuals can show quite wide variation.

Also, you might want to double check with your parents whether or not you are going to apply for financial aid since it has a significant impact on your chances: Without financial aid, most schools in the US cost around $45,000 each year for four years. Have they saved that much?
