A few years ago USNA decided to forego teaching midshipmen how to use a sextant. And look what we’ve come to:

“Army defeated Navy in the 2007 Spirit Rider Regatta held in Long Beach, NY Sept. 7-9. The regatta, sponsored by the Corinthians Sailing Association for Collegiate Sailing and the O’Keefe Foundation, was held in honor of all of those who paid the ultimate price on Sept. 11, 2001.”

10 SEPT07 - First Weekend of ICSA Competition

This weekend was the Intercollegiate Sailing Team’s first weekend of ICSA competitions. We competed in 6 events: 2 Laser events, 1 Radial event, 2 double-handed events, and 1 sloop event. The Navy Laser Open was hosted at the Academy, a big thanks to the midshipmen who ran the Laser Open! 4/c Royce Weber finished 4th at this event, qualifying to participate in our district’s qualifier for Men’s Single Handed Nationals, the Carl Van Duyne Trophy, on September 29- 30 at USNA.

LT Huebner traveled to Old Dominion University with 3 female radial sailors in preparation for their single handed national qualifier, the Faye Bennett Trophy, also to be held at USNA on September 29-30. Also at ODU this weekend was the Riley Cup. The team of 3/c Tim Murphy, 3/c Maggie Boyle, 2/c Andrew Hotchkiss, and 3/c Emily Taynor finished the event in 4th place out of 16 teams.

Members of our sloop team, 1/c Rob Ramirez, 1/c Ian Gill, and 1/c Kevin McGill competed in the J 22 East Coast Championship. This was a competitive event hosted by Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis. This team finished 11th out of 22 teams.

With 19 sailors competing up and down the East Coast, we opened the season with a strong showing. We have 4 double handed events we are preparing to compete in next weekend.

Also, 3 of our team members: 1/c Charlotte Hill, 2/c Andrew Vann, and 3/c Martin Sterling have been selected to compete in a team race against the British University Sailing Association (BUSA team) at St. Mary’s College of MD on Tuesday, September 11th. This is a major honor for our sailors to be selected to compete in this competition! GO NAVY!

I wonder who Navy sent to Long Beach, New York? Looks like the entire Navy IC sailing team was participating in six separate events up and down the East Coast.
GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!

well, my alma mater (California Maritime Academy), just won the Shields Trophy at Navy for the forth time in five years. By the way when I was at the schoolship deck cadets not only had to be able to use a sextant, you also had to be able to reduce a celestial sight using any one of 7 different methods… I even did a “longitude by lunar distance” sight for extra credit on cruise my first class year.

Very cool deepdraft. Tell me, how did the traders in ancient times navigate the Sahara Desert?

^^^^Maybe they used an astrolabe?

I was thinking before the Arabs refined the astrolabe. However, I know that crude instruments existed circa 150 BCE. Can you imagine navigating the Sahara, even today? Remember when Margaret Thatcher’s son got lost during that road race?

Of course all the big Navy sailboats have GPS and SAT phones. I understand only the LT got to call his family during the Bermuda race…
