Dorm appliances

Any recommendations on brands/models of good dorm refrigerators, freezers, microwaves appreciated. D’s college offers a program where you can rent a 3 in 1 model for $159 (with an end of year offer to purchase for an additional $89). I’m thinking I can do better, but I could use some tips from those who have gone before.
Thanks (and apologies if this was covered in an earlier thread – I checked some of those but they didn’t seem to mention the appliances specifically.)

IMO, Cuisinart makes the best kitchenware…but they can be a little pricey.

I especially love their cookware…again, pricey, but my family’s set has lasted FOREVER and we do a lot of home cooking so it gets used a lot.

Walmart has two refrig. models one sells for about 70 and other at 110.

But before you buy separate refrig and microwave check with school if they allow such combination. At my son’s school you can only have the combined gizmo - due to wiring capacity.

D’s school provided the combo fridge/microwave last year, and she got used to having a freezer in the fridge. We have to buy this year (new school) — hope it’s not too expensive!

First make sure that school allows anything other than a fridge/microwave combo unit. Some don’t due allow separate fridge and microwave units due to power issues.

We rented the ones from the school. It’s not so bad when the cost is split between the roommates and you don’t need to deal with the transport of the thing. The one unit for everyone was adequate.

I agree about renting the unit. It is pricey, but I feel that the extra $ goes for the convenience of not moving it in and out again, not having to store it or transport it for the summer. And, if roommates can share the cost it’s pretty reasonable.

Mathson got put in an apartment with a full size fridge and stove and didn’t need anything. So don’t be in too big a hurry to buy things. You never know!

rent. .

Our state u.'s (at least the two my kids go to) provide the microfridges in the rooms. Even if they didn’t, I would rent from the school. It’s just so much more convenient. One less thing to hassle with on move in/out day.

My own personal fridgequest :D

Oh, and it worked fine for his freshman year and is currently in storage at my cousin’s house

waiting to be reactivated when school starts in the fall.

Thank you all so much for the replies.

the rented microfridge is definitely bigger than what you can buy seperately and has that nifty actual freezer inside that holds actual sized food rather than just ice cube trays. If its avasilable for rent for the freshman year dorm I’d say go for it.
